Motorcycle Repair: Rear axle noise - CBR600F4, honda cbr600f4, slow speeds

Question
Hi, I have a Honda CBR600F4 that was laid down on the left side at a very slow speed (approx 5mph). In addition to some fairing scratches there is a loud "clicking" noise coming from the rear axle as the wheel turns. It is mostly heard at slow speeds in 1st or 2nd gear. The click gets more rapid as I speed up and either goes away or I can't hear it anymore at higher speeds.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Ryan,

The noise needs to be investigated. It could be a broken body/fender/mount/frame/chain guard part, etc... rubbing the wheel or tire.

You can check by using a rear lift stand to raise the rear wheel.

Once the rear is supported and raised, rotate the rear wheel by hand while listening and feeling for the souce of the noise.

There are other means to support the MC and raise the rear end. You'll need to be creative with tools you have at hand or have an available MC lift.

You can easily lean the MC to the left and raise the rear wheel while supporting the weight on the side stand and front wheel. Have a couple of spotters present for the inexperienced lean technique operator.
