Motorcycle Repair: gas spits out back of carb on 1992 kaw bayou 220, bayou 220, defective valve

Question
trouble shooting my kawasaki 1992 bayou 220  atv, ok, gas spits out of the back of the carb, not toward the engine on my atv and it will not start, took air filter off and held hand over back of carb, when cranking it pushed hand off and gas got all over my hand,it is getting good spark, why is gas going out back of carb instead of in engine? thanks,mt

Answer
Hi Marshall,

The reason fuel is coughing back through the carburetor (regursion) may be one or more of the following:

Improper valve/camshaft timing.
Defective intake valves or valve seats.
Weak or defective valve springs.
Improperly adjusted valve clearance(s).
