what are the shortfalls to fitting a su carb (32mm) to a 42 wla harley

I haven't the faintest idea.  Seriously, why would you want to do it?   You decrease the value of the bike by removing the original carburetor.  The carb is certainly not set up for a stock 45 cu.in. motor.  Different throttle setup, choke, etc.  The old carbs like Linkerts are fine when they're adjusted right.  Hell, an S&S carb is just a fancy version of a Linkert with an accelerator pump.  You're on your own dude.
