Motorcycle Repair: transmission fluid check, shovel head, chain tension

Mike when you check you tranny fluid should the bike be on the side stand?  1981 Big Twin shovel head = big difference on indicator stick when the bike is stood up.
Also replaced the inner primary chain and it is making a lot of noise.  The tension seems fine.  I figure a brand new chain needs to settle in.  The shoe was immaculate and the chain came greased.  Is there a trick to checking the chain tension  without pulling the primary cover?  The upper run is above the inspection cover and I'd be more comfortable with an exact measurement.

Check the trans fluid with the bike sitting upright.
you check the chain through the inspection cover. you just hve to make sure it is about 1/2 inch when the bike is cold.
just use your finger and extimate the distance.
