Motorcycle Repair: 2000 Yamaha YZF 600R, yamaha yzf 600r, high wind

Question
Falcon,
This is regarding a 2000 Yamaha YZF 600R. The last time I rode it was about 40days back. During this period, the bike fell on the ground once due to an unusually high wind. Also I just replaced the battery with a new one as the older one went dead. I am trying to start the bike up but it wouldn't. It seems to start but never catches up. I was told that there is a fuel cutoff switch which turns off when the bike falls down. I am having difficulty finding this switch. I would appreciate if you could let me know if this might be the problem or if theres something I am missing. Also, if it is the fuel cutoff switch, could you tell me how I could locate it on the bike. Thanks is advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Dewakar.

I have never heard of such a switch.  If one exists, then it should be mentioned in the repair manual.

As far as why it won't start, there could be a number of reasons.  The bike sat for over a month, so the fuel in the system may have turned to varnish and gummed up the works.
Pull and clean the carbs, check the connections for the exhaust manifold and the intake manifolds as well as the carb connection to the intake manifold and make sure that the compression is right.

After that, make sure that the ignition system is within specs and there are no shorts in the wiring.

Start with that and see what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
