Motorcycle Repair: 2000 BUELL M2 CYCLONE, buell m2 cyclone, oil tank

Question
OK,IT'S NO HARLEY(I HAD THEM FOR 25 YEARS!),but why does my oil tank filler plug shoot out and puke oil all over my garage when I start my bike after a couple of weeks rest??

Answer
If your oil tank is over-filled that will happen.  How does it get over-filled?  By checking or changing the oil cold or having a leaky oil pump check valve (ball).  Always run the bike for 3 or 4 minutes before checking or changing the oil.  This gets all the engine oil out of the cam cover and the crankcase and back into the tank to be drained (or checked).  If you don't do this before you check your oil level or change your oil, oil can seep past the check valve into the cam cover and lower end.  Then you fill up the tank and when you start the bike the return pump shoots all that oil back into the tank and it has nowhere to go because you have filled it, so it blows out the dipstick.  IF you have the correct amount of oil in the bike then your oil pump check valve is stuck open or the pressure spring is shot.  I see this happen all the time when HD people change their oil in the spring after a bike sat all winter without starting it and getting it warm first.
