Motorcycle Repair: FLSTF Starting issues, chrome switch housings, starter relay

Question
Hello Roy,
I have a new to me 1999 H-D fatboy. It has about 47,500 miles, and I beleive the only engine type mod is V&H (Big Shot Long pipes). When the weather gets cool, (45d or less) the starter switch acts as if the kill switch or ignition switch are off. Once ambient temps warm a bit, it works just fine. It has never quit while riding, but has failed to restart after a warmup break at 35 or 40d. This has happened a few times, with a few nice rides in betweeen.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer
Larry, it may just be the button on the handlebars.  Only way to find the problem is when it's doing it.  I would put a voltmeter on the starter relay and press the starter button and see if you are getting juice to the relay.  The next most common is a chafed wire in the handlebars or the starter relay itself.  Relays are pretty cheap.  If somebody has changed the handlebars, put chrome switch housings on, or run the wiring through the handlebars it's likely a chafed wire at the right switch housing.
