Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Yamaha Virago 700, sleepy eye minnesota, starter problems

I have the Virago Growl starter problems. The parts look good. No visable signs of wear. When starting the bike it will turn over some and then the starter kicks out. I am looking for suggestions.

Hi Van.

 Pull the starter motor and clean the contacts and if the brushes are worn, replace them.

 Viragos have always had a reputation for eating up starter motors, but I have found that cleaning the contacts and brushes kept the starter working on the 86 XV700 that I used to have.
