-----Question-----
I have a 1989 Honda Shadow 1100. When I slowly release the clutch the bike eases forward,
but upon full release of the clutch the bike stalls out. This is not a lack of experience
using a clutch problem as I am 48 and have been riding since I was 16. I have enough
throttle applied, so I know its not a fuel situation, it just stalls out once the clutch
is fully released...not sure if its a cable thing, clutch thing in general or what...Help!
Thanks

Hi Dave.

The one thing that I really hate about the post-70's bikes are the blasted sidestand and clutch cutoff switches.  Normally it is the sidestand switch that fails, but in your case, my guess is that it is in the clutch switch.  Test the switch and see what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Dave.

The clutch swithch is located at the clutch lever.  It is a simple on/off microswitch.  Put your multimeter to the leads and see if you get continuity in only one position.  If you get continuity in both or no continuity in either, then replace the switch.

Theoretically, there should be a test proceedure in your repair manual for each of the switches in the system.

Good luck and ride safe.
