Answer
Jack, it is a little weird if you've never done it.  First, thread the cable adjuster in so you have as much free-play as possible in the cable itself, then turn the adjusting screw in the center of the clutch until it is completely loose and not putting any pressure on the clutch.  Now back it off about a half turn and lock it there.  Go back to the cable and take up the free-play until you have an eighth of an inch of cable play at the lever.  The trick is to make sure you don't try to adjust the clutch until you have total maximum freeplay in the cable itself.  Let me know if it still doesn't work and I'll try to figure out what you're doing wrong.
