Motorcycle Repair: Clutch adj gone wrong!, clutch lever, locknut

Question
Hi Mike,

I recently tried to adjust the clutch on my 1988 FLHTC and now there's too much slack. Won't tighten at all! I checked the cable in the transmission, but its still connected, thought it came loose, but no. I've looked in the manual but I'm stumped. The cables not broken, theres now no tention cause I cant tighten it enough.

Thanks mate!

Answer
Lets start over. First loosen the locknut on the cable and turnt he cable so you have slack in it (making it shorter).
Go to the adjuster under the derby cover and loosen the locknut. Slowly turn the adjuster screw inward just until it seats and then back it off about 1/8 turn. Tighten the locknut. Now go to the cable and turn it (make it longer). When you have about 1/8 play in the clutch lever tighten the locknut on the cable and your good to go.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
