Motorcycle Repair: 95 KAWASAKI ZX7 POWER/STARTING ISSUES..., kawasaki zx7, regulator rectifier

Question
Hi, I have a 95 Kawasaki ZX7 and it had been down for over a year cause it needed some parts - (brake caliber, chain). I got it back up and running a few weeks ago and it was working ok, it prbably needs a tune-up and adjustment but it was working.

My question is that it started dying on me, and I thought it was the battery considering that it had not been replaced in over 4 yrs. So I bought a new battery and it started working & starting again fine but about a week or so ago it started dying on me again? I can charge the battery for a day and it will work fine for a few hours, but then loses power and dies on me again?

My friend told me that it might be the alternator, but I wanted to see if you could give me you're input on what you think it might be, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

V.M.

Answer
Hi Val,

The charging system may be defective and shouild be tested to verify it's integrity. Perform an output test to determine the charging system's output voltage. Check the regulator/rectifier and electrical conectors.

I return tech information files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested and explained in my instructions.

Visit Electro Sport's website and follow their "Fault Finding Chart" to learn about testing the charging system components.

I recommend that you get a copy of the service (repair) manual. The manual has illustrated repair and testing information, specs, and other important things to know about.
