Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha XS 850 Trident, yamaha xs 850, reno nv

Mark, My Dad wants to give me a 1980 Yamaha XS 850.  He tells me that the stator is bad and the battery is also bad.  Given the age of the bike can the stator be replaced and if so where can I get one.  Or will it need to be rewound. The Bike is in Mohave Ca and I'm in Reno NV. I would like to repair it in Ca. and ride it back to NV.  Thanks for any advise
