Motorcycle Repair: 03 kfx 400 cam chain, kfx 400, timing chains

Question
Recently I've been noticing a rattle or tick on the right side of my kfx. I've had several people say they think its the cam chain or the valves need re-adjusting. I have already shimmed  the valves once so I don't think thats it.If it were the cam chain how hard would it be to replace and what might I need to do it(gaskets, parts, etc.)
any help would be appreciated

Chad

Answer
Hi Chad,

Some top end ticking or tapping is normal. Loose valve clearances and slack in camshaft timing chains often cause such sounds. These sounds may come and go with use and will not harm anything. Tight or zero valve clearances will cause engine damages.

If the timing chain is the source of the sounds, inspect the automatic chain tensioner for proper operation. Replacing the timing chain is major work for the inexperienced. I wouldn't recommend changing the timing chain unless necessary.

It wouldn't hurt to re-check valve clearances. Also, check cylinder compression and perform a leak-down test if compressions reading are out of service limits.
