Motorcycle Repair: wireing to hot, honda shadow 600, altenator

Question
I have a 02 honda shadow 600 vlx. This is what I did first. I put a spotlight bar on my bike. It has two lights with 55 wt bulbs. after riding the bike for a while I smelid somthing hot. I took off the side cover off and saw that the plugin that goes from the stator to the regulator was melted. I thought it may have been a bad plugin. I cut out the melted switch and put a new one on. as long as i did not have the spotlights on every thing was ok. then when I turned on the spotlights on and rode for awhile the same place melted again. I also put a back off tail light switch on. Is the stator not putting out enough amps and thus putting to much load on the regulator? was my bike not made to put on extra lights?  If not what can I do to fix the problem? thank you so much for you help.

Answer
Hi Skippy,

You'll have to use figure total wattage for the lighting system. Sum up total watts of all lights in the circuit.

Compare your readings with the ouitput of the altenator. Find the specs for the altenator in the service manual.

Excessive resistance within the electrical connector can likely be ruled out since the plugs has been changed twice.

If you want the extra lighting, consider a higher oputput altenator. Visit "www.electrosport.com" and browse their products.
