Motorcycle Repair: Hydrolock?, smell of gas, check battery

I have a 2003 Yzf 600
Bike has been fine till now. I try to start but won't turn over... Check Battery... its fine. Keep pushing starter and will finally turn over (Very strong smell of gas) Won't start until it clears out, then gas vapor out tail pipe. My theory is/was petcock wasn't shutting off. Checked it and don't see any problems. Petcock is pretty simple,on/off only one line out(fuel) no lines in (no vacuum either) The line out runs to fuel pump, which pumps fuel fine. Is the fuel pump suppose to stop fuel when its not running? I have tank of now, useing a little water bottle for gas,and will start fine (maybe cause no pressure from full tank of gas pushing gas though system)
I know I need to check the carb float/needle valve, but is this the only thing keeping gas from flowing though system?
What do you think?

hello, ron go to the carbs look for the drain tube blow in it to see if the bike idle up if it does then the overflow line is clogged uo place a wire through it then it will clean it ou also run some fuel injector cleaner through the carbs had a problem yestrday on cb750.this should work ok.
