Motorcycle Repair: 1984 fxrt clutch, clutch plates, vent hose

Question
I was going to change the clutch plates, there was at least a quart of oil in the primary cover. is this normal? the clutch plates seemed to be oil soaked. is this normal? and finaly could this be an oil pump problem?

thanks chuck

Answer
A quart of oil in the primary is to much. In the back of the inner primary there is a return line that goes to the vent hose going to the oil tank. Check it and make usre its not plugged or pinched off.
Look on the top of the oil pump and you will seee a small hose coming out of it. that is the line that sends the oil to the inner primary. Below it you will see a screw. that screw is used to control how much oil is going to the primary. you can run the bike with the inspection cover off and watch the oil driping down ont he chain. You want about 10 drops every minute. Your might be open to much.
If the clutch plates are oil socked then they need to be replaced
Good luck and happy riding
