Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki 750 4-cyl carburation problem, kawasaki kz750, diaphragm material

Question
Have a 1983 Kawasaki KZ750-H LTD 4-cyl that has not run since 1991. Performed a semi thorough cleaning of carbs. Cleaned bowls, jets, unstuck throttle butterflys, chokes needles and seats. Will start now and runs great, idles ok (not sure what RPM setting idle should be set to?) However, when I accelerate up it seems to slowly react back to idle. Haven't actually road tested the bike yet for I have much other work to do. Very responsive and snappy going up in engine acceleration but slow as ever in returning to idle. Did not dismantle the upper diaphram area of the carburetor for fear of creating other problems. Can get the idle response faster by pushing down on the syncronization linkage with a screwdriver and then letting up just before it dies to return to idle. Have read and studied your carb 101 file yet something just doesn't seem right and I can't figure it out. Any input would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mark,

If the RPM's are slow to return, clean and lube the carburetor throttle linkages and connecting rod.

Clean and lube throttle cables. Ensure that the cables are properly routed and adjusted, and in good condition.

Check and adjust carburetor synchronization.

Fuel gets on the throttle slide walls and diaphragm area surfaces causing parts to stick. You'll have to open the carb tops to clean and inspect the diaphragms.

It's important to remove diaphragms during cleanings. Carb cleaners may inadvertanlty reach the diaphragms and attack the diaphragm material, causing them to swell/expand. When this happens, they'll need replaced.

If you want additional tech files on carb tuning, etc... reply with your email address as requested and explained in my instructions.
