Motorcycle Repair: Goldwing Aspencade, gold wing club, ebay auctions

Question
Hi Bill,

I am looking at buying a 1984 Goldwing Aspencade from a fellow who has had both knees replaced and is no longer able to ride.

He is selling his bike.  It has 30,000 mils on it.

My question is after it warms up the bike shuts off and will not start again until it cools off.

Do you have any idea on what the problem could be?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Steve

Answer
Steve, Gold Wings are in kind of a class of their own and I don't really specialize in them and their problems.  None model-specific thoughts about bikes cutting off include: gas cap vent blockages, fuel filter restrictions, fuel pump failure, ignition system resistor failure.  You didn't give a time frame on the shutoff restart and whether that was after driving a distance or just idling after a few minutes.

When it shuts down, you have to quickly pull a spark plug or two and see if there is spark or not. If spark, then most likely the fuel flow is the problem. Be sure that the valves are working properly, the compression is good on all cylinders, the spark timing is correct for both coils and that there is adquate fuel flow through the system.

There was a fuel injected Aspencade that would have its own set of issues, in 1984.

signup and log in and select HONDA motorcycles, then GL1200 and then look at the various options for viewing some of the subsystems.

Go to the www.helminc.com website for factory manuals and/or Ebay auctions for parts and service information. I looked for some GW1200 specific sites for technical support, but didn't have a lot of luck. Perhaps, checking with the main Gold Wing club will get you to some links for the older models.
