Motorcycle Repair: crank case plug, honda manuals, crank case

Question
Hi Mark,
I have a 95 Shadow ACE 1100, the Left crank case plug is leaking oil pretty badly. I bought the parts, just the plug and O-ring. I can not find any reference as "how to" in the manuals I have.
Is there a special way to thread (I have not attempted this as of yet) I don't want to have to buy the crank case!Does the plug "screw in" if so do I have to worry about left hand threads?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Karen,

It seems as if you have the Owner's Manual." Get a copy of the "Service Manual" for how-to information. I recommend Honda manuals.

Get a copy of Honda's "Common Service Manual" here:

This is the parent manual of all Honda manuals. It's not model specific, but covers everything in general.

Drain the oil by removing the current drain plug. The threads are normal (right) thread direction.

Once the oil has drained, inspect the drain plug threads and the drain hole threads for evidence of damages.

If the hole threads are damaged, consider having a local motorcycle shop or machinist look at the damages for repairs.

Hopefully, the drain plug was simply loose and replacing the gasket and reinstalling will stop the leak.

Respectfully,
