Motorcycle Repair: smoke from one cylinder, zrx 1100, honda spirit 750

Question
recent mods include V&H cruiser pipes on my 2001 honda spirit 750, a K&N filter and dynojet kit. bike runs great, but when i riched up the rear cyclinder to eliminate some popping on decel, i started getting bursts of smoke when revving engine. seems like the one cyclinder is too rich. do i need to adjust position of clip on the needle or try another sized jet? i am running baffles in my pipes because it was too loud without them. also, i installed the jet sizes that were recommended for use without baffles. checked for air leaks on all hoses and pipes and could find none.

Answer
Bob,

I'm sorry, but as stated in my profile I specialize only in off road motorcycles.

However, what color is the smoke? If it's white, it's most likely moisture or coolant, and if it's blueish then it is oil, fuel etc..

If it's black, its prob.  running too rich.  What you've done by putting a filter, jetkit & pipes is change the intake/exhaust obviously...

BUT - MOST LIKELY, the popping is  due to the increased back pressure in the pipes, this is normal and most people like the sounds, my 99 ZRX 1100 does this after I put a scorpion pipe on it. My suggestion is live with it, as you can't really do anything about it (if this is the setup you want, cruiser pipes with baffles)

If its blue smoke this can be a compromised piston ring, allowing oil bypass, etc.  You will need a compression check to determine this.
