Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Suzuki TS250X, suzuki ts250x, rear shock

Question
g'day Anthony. just had a few questions regarding the rear shocker on a 1985 TS250X - can these be rebuilt and could i do it myself? are these filled with oil and air or is it some other kind of gas that i need a bike shop to provide? while i've got you, the front forks are a little soft too - how can i go about fixing this? i have limited knowledge on motorcycles but plenty of knowledge about cars.

cheers and thanks for your time,

Russell

Answer
Ah, I love those bikes.

For the rear shock, which has both gas and oil, separated by a seal.  If there is oil on the shock's shaft, or the shaft looks blue, it means your shock needs to be rebuilt.  If you don't have any of these problems, why rebuild? If it is saggy, you can try adjusting the preload or compression settings, or getting a new spring.  You can do these yourself, if you need to rebuild the innards, then bring it to a dealer as you will not be able to pressurize it correctly and it is a messy job - you're also dealing with pressurized gas / oil which can be dangerous if you haven't done it before.

The front forks, you can either use a heavier weight oil or get heavier springs.

If you want to do this yourself - get a clymers service manual, it will outline it. Or you can pull the forks off and the shock, bring both to your dealer and have it done, I recommend that.

Good Luck!
Anthony
