Motorcycle Repair: HONDA CB550 81 ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, honda cb550, electrical problem

Collin:  I own a HONDA CB550 MODEL 1981, I am in the process of rebuilding it and found and the mechanic that worked on it says that the voltage regulator ir burnt. I live in Guatemala and there's quite a few of these bikes around, but I haven't been able to find the right spare part. Basicly the bike won't charge the battery and will die off when it looses it's charge. I have been considering replacing the part for something else that could work...  What literature do you recomend for this? what is your advise to complete this repair? Ok, u r confident in the mechanic?  I only ask because it may also b a stator.  But, if properly tested and it showed good, then u r definatly dealing with a voltage regulator.  I would suggest getting a used one that has tested good.  U can most likely find one at:  www.oldkawman.com  Good luck!
