Motorcycle Repair: Honda CA95 carburetor rebuild, arnold arnold, brass slide

Question
Hi,

I have a 1963 CA95 that I'm in the process of restoring. I have taken the carb off to rebuild it and ran into a snag. I cannot remove the throttle valve. It’s stuck but good. Is there a secret to removal? I tried to follow the manual but it’s kind of vague. It just says remove the throttle valve. Am I missing something here?

Also rebuild kits are hard to come by and the ones I have seen do not include instructions. What’s the proper way to rebuild the carb and set it up afterward?

Thanks,
Arnold

Answer
Arnold, bikes that sit for years often get their carb parts glued together with varnish from old fuels. Get a can of Berryman's carb cleaner or something similar and spray it in both the intake side and the engine side, plus work it down the carb top if you can get it loose enough to open a gap there. Let it sit for a minute or so. If the cable is still attached, that is great. You do NOT want to pry up on the edge of the slide with anything that is metal or you will damage the chrome plated brass slide. Just soak it well, pull on the cable steadily and it will finally give up. If the cable is not there, find something that is hard plastic or soft metal and very gently get under the slide edge and pry up very gently, but steadily.
Use force, not power and it will loosen up if you have sprayed enough carb cleaner around the slide areas.
If you have a carb dip container, just drop the whole thing in! Yamaha makes a good cleaner solution for carbs and fuel tanks.

There aren't any instructions with carb parts. If you have a shop manual it will show the adjustments for them. Float level is 19.5mm, with the float just resting on the end of the spring loaded needle tip, not compressing it. Measure from the carb body edge to the furthest point on the float.

Just be sure that everything inside is clean, clean, clean... all passageways, all jets and any small cross drilled holes in the emulsion tubes.
