Motorcycle Repair: fast idle, yamaha vstar 650, vstar 650 custom

I have a 2000 yamaha vstar 650 custom with carbs.When the bike warms up the idle jumps up to about 4000 rpms when I put it in gear and start to drive if I hit neutral it instantly idles normal it will do this every time why the fast idle every time I start out.It also has a slight dead spot coming off idle starting out then the rpms start to rise. The rpms stay high between the upper gears also till I hit neutral.email bjraine@maxminn.com

How many carbs?  Sounds like u may have a vaccum issue, but only if running on more than one carb.  Has it been jetted?  Have u checked timing issues?  I would suggest that u look into a "Haynes" or "Clymer" manuel 4 your machine?  They can prove invaluable 2 u.
