Motorcycle Repair: 84 Honda Shadow headlight problem, halogen bulb, pencil eraser

Question
Mr. Shively,
Rode my bike to a friends house. I came out three hours later and the headlight would not come on. Got the bike home and purchased a new halogen bulb the next day, installed it but still no light. Thinking it might be the hi-lo switch I took the left assembly from the handlebar (hi-lo sw, turn sig, choke, horn). I sprayed the switch with tuner cleaner, moved the switch but still no results. Out of frustration I pushed the horn button and the headlight came on. halleluyah! Hi-lo switch worked fine along with everything else there. Came out today and started the bike up to warm it up and ten seconds later the headlight went out and I have not been able to get it back on. Is there anything I can do without taking it in to the shop? With the bike being 22 years old is there a history of headlight problems with the honda and are there tests I can do to fix it. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Steve,

Look for defects in the wiring, connectors, and switch.

Check switch contacts for evidence of pitting, corrosion, burning, etc... dress up contacts with a fine grit sanding paper or pencil eraser.

Check continuity of circuit wiring.

Check bulb socket for evidence of corrosion, heat damage, or other defects.

Check wiring for loose connections.

Apply dielectric grease to connectors and contacts to help prevent corrosion and water shorting.

There are no specific headlight defects that I am aware of.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
