Motorcycle Repair: 1986 honda xr100r, valve stem seals, sprocket teeth

Question
hi, i have a 1986 honda xr100r and when i drop the clutch it give this sound like its not gearing properly. It also misses in idle is there a way to fix this problem.

thanx

Answer
Dylan, somewhat of a vague, multi-part question......

Is the clutch adjusted so there is a little freeplay at the lever? Is it slipping? Is the chain tight going to the back wheel? Is the chain jumping over the sprocket teeth?

Check freeplay, test it again. If the clutch is slipping, you will have to replace the plates. If the chain is too loose it will skip over the sprockets. If the sprockets are worn too much, the chain will skip even when the chain is fairly tight.

Misses at idle....... Adjust the valves to .002" cold on both intake and exhaust at the T mark alignment on the flywheel compression stroke. Then you will have to eyeball the points through the little slot to see if they are just barely opening at the F mark alignment. Probably the points have closed down and the timing is now later than it should be. Increasing the gap to around .014" will bring it back to where it belongs.

This all assumes that the engine isn't all worn out, pumping oil past the rings and valve stem seals.....
