Motorcycle Repair: Oil leak after oil and filter change, suzuki gz 250, drain bolt

Question
My wife purchased a used Suzuki GZ 250 a few months ago and had the local Suzuki service department change the oil and filter yesterday.  She rode her bike today for 17 miles and the last 2 miles oil leaked out and she dropped her bike at a stop sign just a block from our home.  She had noticed the rear end sliding for the last mile or so.  What would cause the oil leakage?
I think the service department didn't put the filter in correct or failed to tighten the bolt.

Answer
Hi John,

Oil may leak as a ruslt onf one or more of the following:

A defective oil filter seal.
Oil filter o'ring not properly installed in cover.
Oil filter cover not tightened.
Loose oil drain bolt.
Cross-threaded oil drain bolt.
An excessive amount of oil in crankcase.

There may be other causes that I did not cover here.

I hope your wife is okay. Sounds like a negligence lawsuit to me.

Respectfully,
