Motorcycle Repair: charging system, honda cb 650, solenoid starter

Question
I have a 1979 honda cb 650.i have had the bike for 2 yrs. the bike had 3500 miles on it  when i got it, it now has 9000. the bike runs great, i love it. New problem, i went for a ride about 70 miles or so when i got home the bike was dead, it would not start dead battery. the battery was old so i got a brand new one. i took a ride today about 75 miles or so. it stopped and started the bike a few times with no problems but when i got home i turned it off .. it would not restart, lights on guages worked but not enough power to start it.I guess the charging system is not up to par. this is a new problem that came on suddenly.I have ridden this bike with no problems for two years then suddenly a charging problem?

Answer
Hi Richard,

Get a copy of the service manual.

1) Check fuses

2) Check battery cables at battery terminals for clean, tight connections. Do the same for the cable's other ends. If clean and tighlty connected, move on.

3) Perform an output test to determine if the charging system is working properly.

If meter readings are not within service limits, start testing individual system components until you locate the defective part(s).

Visit www.electrosport.com and try their "Fault Finding Chart" for assistance with testing charging system and components. Electro Sport manufactures premimum parts, much finer than OEM parts.

4) The CB series alternators have carbon brushes. When brushes wear beyond service limits, problems as you've described may occur. Measure brush length, replace accordingly.

5) Test safety switches; clutch/side stand/neutral for proper operation. (continutity test)

6) Test ignition switch, on/off switch, and starter button switch for proper operation. Look for defects, continuity, corrosion, etc...

7) Test starter motor solenoid, starter motor, and starter motor clutch for proper operation.
