Motorcycle Repair: Red-hot exhaust pipes, rev tech engine, intermediate jet

Question
Mike: I just finished assembling a "kit" bike with a Rev-Tech engine. It started up for the first time OK using the "choke." After about 10 seconds I pushed in the "choke" and it seemed to run fine but the pipes heated up red-hot after about 30 seconds. I shut it off immediately. Most questions/answers about this subject seem to deal with overhauled carbs but this one is brand new. Plugs were still clean looking (no color). The only connections to the carb are the fuel inlet line and the bowl over flow. There is a nipple on top (vacuum?) that I left capped off.
Any ideas, hints that could help me?
Bob

Answer
The nipple in top of the intake is for the VOS valve if you have one. If not then plug it off.
Since you carb is now its probably not jetted right and your timing might be off as well.
First thing to do is start the bike and get the timing set. You can go bigger on the intermediate jet to start with. After that you will have to go for a test ride to see hows its running
