Motorcycle Repair: Headlights cause mechanical failure and Idle problem, kawasaki voyager, screw adjustment

Question
I have a 1986 Kawasaki Voyager 1200 (ZG1200A) that I just recently picked up.  Well the frame and the engine is still voyager, all the saddle bags and fairings and accessories were removed.

Anyways, whenever I turn on the headlights my bike really turns to hell and runs like shit for a while.  The headlights are not always on, they are off in the HI position and on in the LO position.  How would I go about changing this so I have both HI and LO instead of on and off, if this would fix it?

Second problem.  My bike does not idle.  To start the bike I have to have the choke on and then when I turn the choke off the bike dies because theres no idle, I can keep the bike running by twisting the throttle.  I read about ignition timing but I cannot figure out how to adjust mine.  Also the throttle cable is a bit loose (when I twist the throttle it stays in the same position, like using cruise control) so would this be a cause of lack of idle?

I know theres a lot of problems but for $560 I couldn't really go wrong.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Nicholas,

Get a copy of the service manual. I recommend Kawasaki's manual.

The engine performance problem may be a result of a defective charging system.

Perform an output test on the alternator. Isolate and test individual charging system components for proper operation. Replace any parts out of service limits.

Visit Electro Sport's website and follow their Fault Finding Charts:

The headlight problem may be a defective bulb, switch, or wiring problem. You'll have to inspect these parts and verify their integrity.

The engine idle problem may be a simple idle screw adjustment, or it may be the result of varnished carburetors.

I return tech files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested and explained in my instructions.
