Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki ts90 starting problem, leak down test, bright spark

Question
Hi Mark,I'm enquiring on behalf of my 14yr old son who has purchased a ts90. I'm getting a spark and the plug is getting wet. the bikemakes no effort to start but now and again it backfires. it's getting a fairly bright spark. The battery has been removed from the system, one of the magneto coils is connected to the points via the condenser and then to the ht coil. If you are getting a spark does that mean the condenser is working fine, the wiring ok? or does it sound more like a fuel problem. The kids got cold turkey, so any help          in getting him up and running will bemuch appreciated.

kind regards
Gary (demented father)

Answer
Hi Gary, (Braveheart)

The ignition system seems to be working normally.

Investigate the carburetor for evidence of varnishing. This is especially true if the TS has been stored or non-used for any periods of time.

Investigate fuel for evidence of contamination.

I suspect a thorough cleaning of the carb will restore performance.

I recommend performing a compression test to learn the condition of the engine. Follow with a leak-down test if necessary.
