Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Honda C70 deluxe, solenoid starter, starter solenoid

Question
I cannot get the electric start to work.  Have "short-wired" from the battery to the starter and it starts just fine. Took the starter button apart, cleaned contacts and it appears to be all right.  Is there a fuse for the starter?

Thank you,
Jim Morrison
P.S. I have a 305 Dream that I intend to work on some day in my retirement years.  I'm 59 now.

Answer
Jim, I have Restoration Guide files available on CDROM for your Dream, when you are ready. I would gather all the parts you need now, though!

The Passport had rather puny electric starters, especially when the battery isn't fully charged. However, you haven't mentioned the starter solenoid, which is activated by the starter button. You should have power on the wire going to the starter button, which when pushed in will ground the circuit, energizing the solenoid field coil and closing the contacts. If the contacts are corroded internally, you may have to replace the unit. Some solenoids can be partially disassembled for a little cleaning, however. Follow the battery hot lead to the solenoid and check the connections there and/or test it for proper function.

Sounds like the starter motor/clutch is okay and the battery is capable.... you just need to energize a functioning switch in between..

Circuit basics are:
Battery///Solenoid///Starter Motor -Ground (case) - larger battery cables

Battery//Ignition Switch///Primary circuit (solenoid)// Starter Switch- Ground (handlebars) - small diameter ignition wiring.

Hope this helps/makes sense to you...
