Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Honda GL 1500 Motor shuts off while riding, honda gl 1500, vacuum hose

Question
When starting out on a trip the bike has shut down after traveling 50 miles or less. After setting for a minute the bike will then run with no incidents. However on one occasion the bike attempted to shutdown after a 10 mile restart. I can ride the bike on most occasions after the first shutdown. My service people have told me to wait until it no longer runs. Thank you for your help jeffluan@epix.net

Answer
Hi Jeff,

I can understand the shop's reasoning for waiting until the problem prevents the engine from starting. It's difficult to diagnose intermittent problems.

I suspect one or more of the following:

1) Pinched fuel hose
2) Weak vacuum hose collapsing under vacuum
3) Carburetor or tank venting problem
4) carbs varnished
