Motorcycle Repair: 1987 YAMAHA FJ 1200 FUEL DELIVERY, yamaha fj 1200, getting pissed

BOUGHT BIKE 2 WEEKS AGO, TEST DROVE IT 10 MILES (LATE AFTERNOON)BIKE RAN GREAT.  GOT BIKE HOME, WENT TO RIDE TO WORK (EARLY MORNING) GOT 3 MILES, BIKE DIES.  FEELS LIKE BIKE RUNNING OUT OF GAS.  WON'T START ON MAIN OR RESERVE (ELECTRIC OPERATED / VACUUM DRIVEN PETCOCK - WHICH WAS RECENTLY REPLACED).  THIS HAPPENS 3 TIMES, GET 3 MILES DOWN ROAD, BIKE DIES, ALL EARLY MORNING.  FUNNY THING, GET ON BIKE LATE AFTERNOON, EARLY EVENING, RIDE BIKE 100+ MILES, BIKE RUNS GREAT.  THOUGHT TANK WASN'T VENTING, REPLACED FUEL CAP, NOT THE FIX.  PETCOCK OPERATES PROPERLY WHEN VAC APPLIED (KNOW THIS BECAUSE I HAVE TO REFILL THE CARB BOWLS BY APPLYING VAC MANUALLY) CURRENTLY RUNNING BIKE WITH PETCOCK IN RESERVE AND SELECTOR SWITCH DISCONNECTED (RODE 300 MILES PLUS AND BIKE RAN GREAT - HAVE NOT TRIED IN EARLY AM - BOSS GETTING PISSED WITH MY TARDYNESS) FUEL SYSTEM FAIRLY SIMPLE, NO FUEL FILTER, NO FUEL PUMP.  ANY IDEAS? WHY ONLY IN MORNING, LIKE CLOCK WORK, 3 MILES AND I START STARVING BIKE FOR FUEL?  LOVE THIS BIKE AND WANT TO SHOW HER OFF AT WORK.

Hi Sean.

The fact that the bike runs badly in the am and great in the afternoon makes no sense to me, but you should check a few things out.

Check the vacuum line for the fuel selector switch as well as the carbs.

The vacuum line could have a leak in it or there could be an issue with dirty fuel.  There could be particulate matter getting into the fuel system from the tank.  Install an inline fuel filter to catch as much of that as possible.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
