Motorcycle Repair: Starting problem on Yamaha 2002 V-Star 1100 Classic, starter clutch, clutch replacement

Question
When I try to start the bike, the starter motor just makes a whirring noise and will get hot if I keep trying to turn it over. I hadn't ridden for a couple of weeks but had no problem at that time. When I kept trying to start it two days ago, the whirring eventually seemed to slow and it caught. Started fine when I tried it several times later that day. When tried yesterday, same whirring noise. I had a problem last summer with it not starting but then it was making a clicking noise or nothing, and I replaced the starter motor 8/05 and then the battery when the starter didn't fix it. Voltage on current battery is good, and there is no obvious defect with the battery. I checked in Clymer and the shop manual but without any clear ideas about this problem. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi David,

I think the starter and starter clutch (One Way Clutch) are the problems. I've listed links that have images and intel about these problems and the fixes.

Let me know what you find.

FYI... I return tech information files by email. There was no email with your question as requested and explained in my instructions.
