The plugs actually looked like it might be running a little lean. they looked fine a tad bit light. I am not sure what all he did. I know he took the carb off but other than that i dont know. and I beleive he advanced the timing just a hair

I have a 1986 fxrp which is all stock save for the extras the police put on it. The bike was running fine until i put straight pipes on it. I took it to a shop where he took the carb off and then messed with the timing. The bike seemed to be running fine. A few days later I took a a trip and the bike was running fine, then going down the highway it seemed to miss a couple of times, backfired and then shut off. Now it seems as tho it has no spark at all.The battery is fine as well.  I have tried putting on a new ignition deal (brain) and I have tried new spark plugs and wires. Have tried a couple of different coils, checked the wiring on the ignition and they all seemed fine. I don't know what else to do. Can you suggest anything?

Answer -
If you remove a spark plug and hold it to the head and turn the bike over, do you get a spark? Also, when you turn the ignition on are you getting 12 volts at the coil?
Mike

yes and yes

One more question. the plugs you took out, what color were they? Also, do you know what the mech did to the carb as well as what he did to to timing?

Answer
SInce you have spark at the plugs it is probably not a wiring problem. It sounds like a fuel problem. Remove the air cleaner and look down the throat of the carb and twist the throttle, are you getting a shot of gas? If not then somthing is wrong with the work that was done on the carb. If you are, then check the timing. When the shop changed the timing they might not have gotten the bolts tight and the timing slipped
Good luck and happy riding
