Motorcycle Repair: 1986 z50 kick start issue, z50r, carby

Question
Hi Chris
I have had a z50r for about 8 years now and have never done any
work on it.  Which is the best manual to get hold of to start reading
before i try to fix it? the only one i can find is clymers

the kick start lever isnt engaging, where it normally engages it just
clicks, for the moment we are push starting it but i would like to fix
it.  i have done some mechanical work on cars before and helped
when some friends scraped all the crap out of the carby (when i
first bought the z50) so i am not helpless :) any help will be greatly
appreciated

Answer
Hi Nina.

It sounds like either a gear is stripped in the kickstart mechanism or an engagement spring is gone south on you.

As far as repair manuals are concerned, Clymers is very good, but the absolute best is the factory repair manual.  You will be able to order that from a dealership or any really good bike shop.  Be specific, if you are ordering from a regular shop.  Be sure that you are getting the factory manual.  The usually run around $50 or so.

Good luck and ride safe.
