Motorcycle Repair: Changing out Cables, yamaha vstar, throttle cables

Question
Hi Eric! Just a general question about changing out cables on a Yamaha VStar 1100 Custom (2005).  I installed a set of pull back risers; as a result I need to add longer cables.  My local dealer won't do it because of liability.  I'm thinking of installing the push/pull throttle cables, clutch and choke cables myself.  My question is whether-or-not this is something I should try on my own.  I do have a manual and I have some mechanical ability.  I'm just a bit nervous about messing with the throttle, etc.

I'm sure you've done this a lot so what do you think?  Is it really hard?  Require any special tools?  Or do the cables connect in basically straight forward ways that is easy to see with a manual and a little common sense?

I know you get a LOT of questions but would appreciate any opinions, tips, or "watch outs", you'd be willing to offer.

Thanks in advance for your time Eric!

Best Regards

Answer
Joe, that job is pretty straight forward and a little common sense is all thats needed. just a few things to remember when done is, the play in the lever should be about the width of a quarter (where the back of lever meets the perch). do all but the choke this way and while running turn the handle bars both ways lock to lock and make sure it dont rev up on you. no special tools are needed but sometimes the cables are hard to get into place on the perch. the perch is the last hook up you would want to do. run everything up to the bars then hook bars up last. a trick i use to get the perch hookup done is to put the cable in to the lever and hook the cable onto the adjustment nut. pull lever back and while pulling the cable backwards let go of the lever and it will pop into the adjustment nut slot and into the nut. i hope this makes sense, without showing you this is the best i can do.. :)  but all in all its very simple and i would not be afraid to do it just make sure you do one at a time and and take your time and youll be fine.
