S&S 96 inch super stock, Have 2600 miles on this engine. Did compression test at 1500 miles, 210 pounds on rear jug, 214 pounds on front jug, confirmed numbers with a different compression tester. called factory as I thought this was too high, They were happy with it. Always to much top end noise. Had push rods adjusted by HD dealer, TODAY 2600 miles, bike not really performing as I think it should, still top end noise and a little more pronounced, repeat compession test 210 rear jug..STILL...214 front jug..STILL.. turned around and heard and SNAP and I start to lose compression on the gauge on frint jug, Do not here leaking out of front jug exhaust. DRAG PIPES, performed test again with different tester, same results...broken spring?...Put plugs back in and fired up fine. What do you think is up and what should I try next to nail this down?

Thanks for any help

When you say its not performing like you think it should, what is it doing?

Hello Mike,
just does not have the punch it ought to have especially for a NEW engine. I had a lot of pinging on the intial set up.took it to a HD dealer to have it gone through and re timed.Have a DYNA 2000 programable ignition HD Diagnosed a Bad VOES switch, I authorized the VOES switch to be replaced. Got it back they had not replaced the VOES switch, instead placed my DYNA 2000 to VOES off which the manual says is only good for bikes that running nitrus or turboed and you need to rewire certain items to make this work anyway which they did not do. The bike was doggy and still pinging and running hot (225 F) when I got it back. I took it back, made them replace the VOES switch re-time the bike. The pinging decreased dramatically the bike now runs at 190 to 200 F tops. Yet not as responsive and the top end noise has been increaseing over time to include vibration. The exhaust sounds(off).
Thanks Mike

Answer
The pinging you are refering to, might be either spark plug knock or the valve lash in the pushrods.
Start by retarding the timing a little. This will help with spark plug knock. If its the pushrods he dealer might not have adjusted them right. Adjust them by having the lifter all the way down. Tighten the pushrod and wait around 15 minutes. If you can turn it in your fingers then tighten it again. You need to keep doing this until you can tturn it anymore. Dont forget to wait the 15 minutes each time you do it. Once it tight, turn it back until it turns between your fingers. Now turn it additional 1/2 turn. Do all of them the same. When you ride it it will take around 10 to 20 miles to pump up properly.
Also, check the plugs. If they are white then youa re running lean and need the intermediate jet replaced.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
