Motorcycle Repair: Softail Evo Stalls, battery connections, faulty wiring

Question
Mike, The lights also cut out once I'm in a gear.I think there are only 2 options:  either my battery is bad or the key ignition switch. The reason I think its the key ignition switch is that once the lights died out and I came to a complete stop, I turned the ignition on and off and the lights came back on and the bike started up easily.I'm thinking this since its a custom built bike that maybe the ignition switch may either be loose or possibly faulty wiring(also that once I turn the key, it actually turns a bit farther than it should)what are your thoughts?

Thanks again

Mike,

I checked and tightened connections and the bike still dies after being in gear under acceleration.  it wouldn't be the cause if the battery connections were loose once the bike was started right?  meaning, the bike won't stall once it's started.

Thanks

Question -
Mike,

My bike occasionally doesn't start.  The choke is pulled out, there is enough fuel and once I hit the pusbutton, I hear a click.  after the second or third time, it'll start.  I then push the choke back in after it warms up, take it for a ride and it has died when I'm in first, second or third gear intermittently.  I had charged the battery with a slow charger and it charged after an hour.  it just seems like something electrical, but I don't really know where else to look.  Last night, I changed the plugs and it starts right up (when it does start).  It seems that there is a loose electrical connection somewhere, but I don't really know where to start.  any suggestions?

The bike can still stall after starting, due to the fact that a harleys always runs off the battery. Not like a car which runs off the alternator.
Either you have a short in the wiring or a bad ignition.

Answer
I would start the bike and when it stalls, since the lights go out too, take a test light and check the power going to the ignition switch as well as going away fromm the switch to the ignition. If you have power then follow the wire with the test light until you find the short. If you dont, then the switch is probably bad.
Good luck and happy riding
