Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Honda 700 shadow carburetor, chain tension, shutoff valve

Question
Hi Chris,  I have a 1985 Honda vt7oo shadow. It was laid up for two years.  I cleaned the carb twice and install new float shut off valves and seats.  I can get my machine to idle and if I open the throttle quickly it stalls out.  If I open the throttle slow it seem to take the gas correctly.  I need help and hope you can supply it.  Also what the purpose of the air shut-off valve and how does it work.

Answer
Hi Armand.

The air shutoff valve is a choke, or enricher, of sorts.  Do not tamper with it's operation if you can avoid it.

The problem that you are having could be one or more of the following;

1) Carbs are out of synch.  Synchronize them.

2) The valve and ignition timing is off.  Timing is likely retarded farther than it should be at idle.

3) The valve gap is off.

4) The cam chain tension needs adjustment.

5) That air shutoff valve is sticking.  See if the plugs are fouling.

6) There is an air leak in the carb system between the air filter and the heads.  Check to see if the plugs are fouling and check the connections of the carbs to the air filter box and to the manifolds as well as the manifolds to the heads and manifolds to the carbs.

Start with those and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
