Motorcycle Repair: trying to figure out entire VIN, 7 digits, vin number

Question
i bought an ´82 seca 750 and the title displays only 7 digits of the actual VIN.
i'm lead to believe the "legal" VIN for this bike is now only 7 digits.   aren't VIN's
usually 17 digits?  the bike is now registered under my name listing only 7 digits
as the VIN.
i look at the sticker on the frame that shows the VIN up at the steering pillar and
it appears that over the years the electrical wiring has rubbed off most of the
numbers as well as the sticker.  the first 3 letters and the last 7 digits are all that
are visible.  the last 7 digits are what´s actually printed on the title.
would you know how i could go about gettting the original (actual) VIN number?
thanks for any help
Bob

Answer
Hi Bob.

Normally, the VIN is 16 digits long.  The only way to find out for sure what the original vin was, you would likely need to contact the DMV and do a title search of some sort that would find out the previous owners of the bikes and the VIN# as it was originally listed in the first registration.

Good luck and ride safe.
