Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Maxim Clutch Problem, yamaha xj 750, clutch adjustment

Question
I own an 82 Yamaha XJ 750 Maxim. I noticed that when the clutch lever was down and I revved the engine the wheel would turn. Also when switching into second the gears grinded. I assumed that it would be an easy adjustment. Turns out it wasn't. Now the bike won't start unless it is in neutral. Once I put it into gear it stalls. Please help I don't want to miss any more riding.

Answer
Hi Miguel.

Adjust the cable back to where it was.  If you have the repair manual, then follow the instructions in it for clutch adjustment.

The biggest thing to remember is that the wheel will tend to want to turn (if the bike is on the centerstand) whether the bike is in gear or not.

Tuning the clutch on that bike is a simple proceedure that requires a bit of hands on finesse to describe how it should be done properly.

You have the clutch adjusted too far in the wrong direction so it needs to be backed out a small bit from where it started.

You want less grab, but not so little that the clutch slips when you use it.

Do the readjustment and let me know what happens.
Good luck and ride safe.
