Motorcycle Repair: yamaha virago oil issues, oil filler cap, drain bolt

Question
Deat Sir: I purchased today a Yamaha Virago 750...92' for my girl. She's learning how to ride and has graduated to a bigger bike.  My ?  Where is the oil filter?  It appears that it might be on the right side above the brake lever. A round cover with three allen bolts. Is that it?  Also I can't find the oil filler cap or dip stick.  There is  a screw cap with a o ring on the left side of the case that appears to be it.  There is no dip stick attached to it to measure the oil level.  When I look in the hole I see drive gears, probably for the trans. and a timing chain I believe.  I don't however see any oil in there.  The bike runs grreat and soundds quiet, no problems.  I would like to change the oil and fill it properly as well as be able to check it.  Can you help me?  Thanks in advance.. Steven Pignataro  This the first time i've been here does the answer come to my email?  I will bookmark the page and check back later.

Answer
Hi Steve.

Anything to do with the engine oil will be on the engine.

1) There is NO dipstick on this bike.  The way to check the oil level is with a sightglass on the lower right (as you are on the bike) side of the engine.  Put the bike up on the centerstand on level ground to check it.

2) to change the oil, there is a drain bolt on the underside of the engine and the oil filter will be at the bottom of the engine as well.  Refer to the repair manual for all details.

3) The hole in which you saw the gears is the oil fill hole.

Good luck and ride safe.
