Motorcycle Repair: starter, extension spring, starter motor

starter spins but dont turn the motor where the starter gos in on the other side is the generator how do i fix this problem will the case have to be split or how do i get to the gear the starter turns

Hi Dave.

Sometimes the starter motor will "stick", meaning the acuator shaft will not extend and engage the gear for the engine.  When this happens, it normally means that the starter motor needs to either be repaired or replaced.

You need your repair manual to be able to know if you will need to split the case or not.  You shouldn't need to do that to access the starter motor.  Normally, on every bike that I have seen, they are bolted to the engine externally.

Another possibility is that the starter gear on the engine side is worn in one or more spots.

Or there is another issue with the starter mechanism, not related to the motor.  Perhaps an extension spring is broken or worn.

Again, refer to your repair manual for the specifics for your bike as most bikes are different from each other as to how the starter mechanism functions.
