Motorcycle Repair: Honda electrical fault - ignition, electric fuel pump, electrical fault

I think have traced the problem , via the wiring diagram and your advice to the fuel pump - it is operated by a relay which only powers the pump once the engine is running and the relay gets a signal from the coils - I checked the (electric) fuel pump and got continuity through it with my multi -meter which seemed wrong - I connected it to a 12v battery with a 10A blade fuse in the circuit and the fuse blew (and the pump didn't run!)so I think I will try a new fuel pump.

Haven't checked the coil wiring yet casue the access to the left coil is so tricky.

Am i right in thinking there shouldnt be continuity through the feed and return wires to the pump?

Chris, my old grey import Honda CBR400RRJ (NC23)has developed an electrical fault and keeps blowing the 10amp ignition fuse. The problem occurred whilst i was riding and I basically coasted to a stop. If I replace the fuse, I can turn on the ignition fine but when I start the bike the fuse blows as soon as it starts to turn over ... however... if i use the kill switch I can turn the engine over fine so I know its not a starter related fault. The bike has two ignition coils I can see, each serving a pair of cylinders. I have a manual and a multimeter but i'm not sure how to go about finding the fault. All the other fuses are ok so lights, horn, brakelights, indicators work fine and the battery has been tested and is in good working order. Could one of the igniton coils suddenly develop a fault like this ?

Hi Mike.

The most likely short is in the wiring to the coils between the fuse and the coils.  Start by checking the entire circuit and if all is well, then check the coils themselves.

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Hi Mike.

This does sound like a bad fuel pump.  You should not have gotten continuity from the fuel pump.

When you hooked it up to power, it should have started pumping fuel out immediately.

Fuses blow when there is a short in the system, so you have a bad fuel pump.  If this is the original pump, then you got a good run out of it, so it's not so bad.
