Motorcycle Repair: Possible clutch problem, coolant level, kawasaki zx1000

Question
Chris,  I have a 1987 Kawasaki ZX1000.  When I am accelerating, if I give it to much throttle, the engine sounds like it is in neutral.  It seemed to only happen when I got stuck in traffic.  When this happens, the bike will not go unles I feather the gas a little at a time.  The other day it started as soon as I started the bike.  Also my bike gets hot very quickly, could my thermostat be bad.  If you could let me know what you think, I would appreciate it.

Answer
Hi Steve.

It is very possible that the bike is overheating.  Check your coolant level as well as the oil.

Check the thermosensor as per the repair manual to see if it is bad.

You could just have a need to rebuild the clutch, too.  If it is the original clutchplates, then a rebuild may be needed.  Just follow the instructions in the repair manual for that.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
