Motorcycle Repair: Rocker Box Assembly, harley davidson 1340, crankcase pressure

Question
I have a 1998 Harley-Davidson 1340 Evolution engine. The top rocker box covers started leaking oil mist air out the front of both top covers. I put a new set of gaskets on and they still leaked in the same place. They are leaking in the front area where the umbrella valve goes(or doesn't go). When I disassembled the rocker boxes I noticed a channel in the center rocker box section for the gasket to sit in. The channel went around the whole piece except for a small section in front of the umbrella valve area. There was no lip in that area. I think that when I torque the covers down the rubber gasket is squeezing into the umbrella valve area where it is missing the lip of the channel. This is allowing some of the crankcase pressure to vent in and out while the engine is running. Is this a design flaw?
Can you tell me the procedure you follow to install the rocker boxes? Torque and torque sequence, what brand gaskets etc. I'm becoming an expert Harley mechanic as I wear out all the threads on my bike! Thanks

Answer
pull your rocker boxes and check them with a straight edge. they might be warped and holding up the gasket. All the rocker boxes are made like yours. When i install them I cross tighten them and tighten thm as tight as I can get them. I dont use a torque. the gaskets I use are James Gaskets
Good luck and happy riding
