Motorcycle Repair: ATV Stator, conductor of electricity, fly wheel

Question
Mark

I have a 150cc 4 stroke ATV (Chinese Model). I got it wet while riding it. Water made it in around the fly wheel, it ran for a few minutes then died. I removed the plug and have no spark. How do I test to make sure the stator is the only thing damaged and if its actually damaged. Could the CDI or coil have been affected as well I don't think they got wet as the water was only about half way up on the flywheel fan cover. Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Steve,

Water shorting may be temporary, non-damaging problem. Allow time for the water to evaporate and try starting. When electrical connectors dry, apply dielectric grease to connectors to help prevent water shorting.

Water is a very good conductor of electricity. It's possible for water shorting to damage the electronics.

I don't have any service data on this vehicle.
